Sociology: Methodology, Methods, Mathematical Modeling # 31 (2010)

SUMMARY

VESELKOVA N.V. «City Mental Maps: Issues of Methodology and Empirical Experience»: The article grounds the strict treatment of mental map method as a locality drawing performed by informant at researcher’s request. Four methodical criteria of distinguishing mental map method from close methods and practices are introduced. Technical details and heuristic potential of the method are demonstrated on the basis of empirical research.

Key words: mental maps, social mapping, image of the city, city experience, network.

MOZGOVAYA A.V., SHLYKOVA E.V. «“Social Acceptability of Risk” as a Sociological Concept»: The experience of sociological interpretation of the “social acceptability of risk” concept is presented in the article. The place of sociology in the riskology as an interdisciplinary research field is founded. The relation of “social acceptability of risk” and such sociological concepts as “adaptation” and “communication” is considered. The potentialities of “admissible damage” as an indicator of social acceptability of risk are evaluated for different social actors.

Key words: risk, security, social acceptability of risk, risk adaptation strategies and practices, risk communication.

OBEREMKO O.A. «The Typology of Inter-Group Oppositions: A Semantic Analysis of Open-Ended Questions Responses»: Based on a semantic theory of antonyms here is presented a model for coding responses to two typical open-ended questions: What social groups would you define as ‘We’ and ‘They’? The model is meant for coding both quantitative and qualitative data.

Key words: inter-group opposition, group self-identification, antonyms, open-ended questions, coding the data.

TATAROVA G.G., BESSOKIRNAYA G.P. «Typological Analysis of Workers by Their Labor Attitude»: The article presents the technique of typological analysis of workers by their labor attitude. The technique is founded on four-component structure of “labor attitude” concept validated by factor analysis, logic indexes formed as classification characteristics and typological syndromes revealed by cluster analysis and interpreted with the help of discriminant analysis.

Key words: labor attitude, metamethod of data analysis, basis of typology, type-formative characteristic, logic index, classification characteristic, factor analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis.

LEBEDEV P.A. «Online Focus Group Method as a Research Technique»: The article analyses the specificity of the online focus group method which is new for Russian research practice. The paper systematizes Russian and foreign experience in this field and suggests a typology of approaches for online discussions.

Key words: online research, focus group, online focus group.

MAVLETOVA A.M. «Sociological Online Surveys: How to Construct a Typology»: The paper reviews a typology of web surveys based on the population of inference. The author discusses five types of online surveys the results of which can be applied to: (1) the factual sample, (2) users of the particular web-site, (3) members of the chosen social groups, (4) Internet users and (5) the whole population.

Key words: Web surveys, online surveys, the population of inference, sampling error, coverage error, non-response error, access-panel surveys, social network services, hard-to-reach groups.

STREBKOV D.O. «The Possibilities of Online Surveys in Russia (By the Example of Electronic Freelancers Survey)»: The article deals with the advantages and shortcomings of online surveys. The research of Russian-speaking electronic freelancers (e-lancers) is used as an example to illustrate them. Specifically it is shown what particular opportunities online surveys give both for researchers and respondents to improve empirical data quality. Among different limitations the problems of systematic sampling errors, inadequate information, technical and communicative failures are discussed.

Key words: Web survey, online survey, representativeness of and biases in sampling in online surveys, freelancers, survey development monitoring, internet communication.

BERDYSHEV C.V. «Vertical Occupational Mobility as a Markov Process»: The article reviews the development of the class of models with Markov properties. The suitability of such models for the analysis of vertical occupational mobility is being justified. The method for the analysis is suggested and approbated on the RLMS panel data.

Key words: sequence analysis, Markov chain, Markov process, Markov property, vertical occupational mobility.

TSYLEV V.R. «The Difficulties of Qualitative Research Strategy Teaching»: The article touches upon the difficulties to appear in the process of teaching of qualitative strategy using in research practice. The difficulties are determined by the contradiction between the theoretical explanation of methodological principles of qualitative research and their distortion in practical using these methods. The article states that these contradictions are based on the multiple treatments of such concepts as paradigm, methodology, method, qualitative method.

Key words: methods teaching, qualitative method, qualitative methodology, paradigm, methodology, method, classical research.
