Khavenson T.E., Tyumeneva Y.A. From Correlational to Quasi-Experimental Design in Educational Research: Using Fixed Effects Regression Models

In the paper an attempt to study causal relationship on cross-sectional data is described. Suggested methodology is based on quasi-experimental design and using fixed effect regression models. We examine the TIMSS 2007 data to study the relationship between teachers’ credentials and students’ achievements. We describe the methodology in details, compare results obtained on empirical data with OLS regression ones.

Ivaniushina V.A., Alexandrov D.A. Inter-ethnic Relations in Russian Schools: a Study Using Network Dyadic Modeling

The article employs multilevel network dyadic modeling (p2 model) for investigation of inter-ethnic relations in school. Benefits and limitations of the method are discussed. We apply p2 modeling to analyzing adolescent friendship networks in 80 multi-ethnic school classes in St.Petersburg schools.

Balashova G.K. An Experience of Applying Methods of Studying Subjective Well-being in Sociological Research

This article describes the experience of studying factors influencing the social well-being of educational migrants as measured by means of a psychological well-being scale (A. Perrudet-Badoux, G.A. Mendelsohn, J. Chiche, 1988), previously adapted for Russian by M. V. Sokolova. A statistical analysis of the scale’s reliability is performed. Trends in dynamics of subjective well-being are identified on the basis the correlations analysis between the conditions of adaptation and its success rate, and potential mechanisms for developing subjective well-being among student migrants living in student hostels are described. Particular attention is paid to commuting as a factor of adaptation.

Abramov R.N. Methodological and Substantive Approaches to Social Studies of Blogs: an Analytical Review

Article is based on analysis of the Russian and foreign publications on the topic of social studies of blogosphere. The main objective of the paper is to show the potential of these studies and to mark key research issues of studying the blogosphere. The article describes the blogosphere as a form of Internet-communication; ethical aspects of using blogs in research are examined. Main methodological strategies for social research of blogosphere are described.

Gavrilov K.A., Tolmach A.D. Lay Responsibility Ascriptions after a Terrorist Attack: Reconstructing Blamed Actor Categories for Content Analysis

We used texts published in web blogs after the Domodedovo terrorist attack in January 2011 in order to demonstrate the possibility of reconstruction of actor categories, which are blamed for this unfavorable event. A system of actor/action categories is constructed, indicators of responsibility are defined. We also conducted a pilot study in order to analyze the intercoder reliability that provides evidence of the applicability of the constructed categories in further empirical research

Orlov A.I. Measurement Theory as a Part of Data Analysis Methods: Reflections on the Translation of the Article by P.F. Velleman and L. Wilkinson

According to the contemporary paradigm of applied statistics, the measurement theory is a part of data analysis methods. P.F. Velleman and L. Wilkinson claim that using the measurement theory «in selecting or recommending statistical analysis methods is inappropriate and can often be wrong». This article provides a brief overview of the role of measurement scales and of application of the measurement theory in choosing the mean values. Arguments against using this theory «in selecting or recommending statistical analysis methods» presented by P.F. Velleman and L. Wilkinson are analyzed. Several issues of applied statistics (data analysis) are clarified: it is demonstrated that defining a specific research task and choosing a data model applied influence on the specification of the measurement scales; fields of applying explorative analysis and evidentiary statistics are separated.

Osgood C.E. Semantic Differential Technique in the Comparative Study of Cultures (part II) (Russian translation by M.B. Vilkovskiy)

A series of eliciting and rating procedures is used to find that adjective-like modifiers exhibit three very similar semantic factors in all of the six language groups which were investigated. These three factors, labeled «Evaluation», «Potency», and «Activity», are considered to be general aspects of affective meanings of signs. In the second part of this paper, the author discusses current and prospective research that utilizes these semantic factors as a measuring instrument
